Born and raised in Brampton, the 35-year-old soccer star, Atiba Hutchinson, has made his name primarily in Istanbul, where he is beginning his sixth season in the Turkish Super League as a midfielder for Besiktas JK. As a measure of his fame in Turkey, where he played a key role in Besiktas’s run to league championships in 2016 and 2017, Hutchinson’s Instagram account boasts 486,000 followers, the most of any Canadian soccer pro and more than plenty of athletes who are household names in these parts, among them Thornhill-raised tennis pro Milos Raonic (371,000) and Scarborough-bred Olympic...

ICE HOCKEY

Jarome Iginla, the Canadian ice hockey player who made the crucial pass for Canada's winning goal in the 2010 Olympic final in Vancouver, has officially retired from the sport aged 41.   The announcement from Iginla, who played the game for more than two decades, has come as no surprise as he made no appearances in the 2017-2018 season. The over-time assist that gave Canada the Olympic gold against arch rivals the United States is the most memorable moment of his career, but Iginla also played in two other Winter Games, in 2002 and 2006.   In his first Olympics as a 24-year-old, Iginla...

The federation also noted that this is the second year women have out-earned men in alpine skiing since the top 13 female skiers made the most in the 2016-2017. When it came to actual...

Sebastian Vettel has no hard feelings about Valtteri Bottas hitting him in Hungary, acknowledging the Mercedes driver had “no grip” as they battled over second place.   Bottas pitted on lap 16 of the Hungarian Grand Prix and his tyres were worn as the race entered the final 10 laps. This gave Vettel, running fresher tyres, the opportunity to attack which he did with five to go. He passed Bottas at the exit of Turn 1 but the Finn fought back only to lock up and hit the rear right of Vettel’s Ferrari.   “I felt, all of a sudden, I got hit from behind,” said the German. "For him there wasn’t...

F1 Needs Teams For Driver Development

Formula 1 needs more teams like former backmarker Minardi because there are currently too few opportunities for young drivers to break through, according to Haas team principal Gunther Steiner.

Minardi raced in F1 for 21 years from 1985 and was renowned for giving young talented drivers a chance with the likes of Fernando Alonso, Giancarlo Fisichella, Jarno Trulli and Mark Webber all getting their start in F1 with the team.
